The story behind my photo series "Tides" is a fictional exploration of the untold narratives of our ancestors and their enduring spirits. The series imagines that hurricanes are not just natural phenomena but the spirits of enslaved individuals who jumped from ships during the transatlantic slave trade, reclaiming their agency in a final act of defiance. These storms, powerful and unrelenting, symbolize the collective pain, strength, and resistance of those who were lost to the sea.
"Tides" is my fictional take on this concept, merging the haunting beauty of the ocean with the deep, unspoken history it holds. Each image captures the interplay between water and spirit, depicting ethereal figures emerging from the waves, their presence both mournful and commanding. The series serves as a visual homage to those who were erased from history, turning their tragedy into a story of resilience and eternal power.
Creating "Tides" allowed me to blend elements of history, folklore, and imagination into a deeply moving narrative.
