In the musical era of the 1990s, Missy Elliott was an established rap artist and songwriter. Her work with the hip-hop band, The Supremes, remains one of her most notable accomplishments. In 1997, Missy Elliott released her debut album, Supa Dupa Fly. Her career trajectory was an impressive one with several commercial and critical successes. Missy Elliott is a four-time Grammy Award winner who has sold more than 30 million albums in the United States alone. Her success and popularity can also be attributed to her unique marketing skills.
Missy Elliot is one of the most talented and forward thinking artists in the music industry. Her music style is very diverse. She has been able to combine her knowledge and understanding of music with her fashion sense and this has led her being one of the most innovative and game changer icons when it comes to her videos and visuals.
Rachel Kaadzi Ghanash quotes in her article, Her Eyes Were Watching the Stars: How Missy Elliott Became an Icon, “When Missy Elliott dropped her debut album exactly 20 years ago, she altered the spectrum and the range of hip-hop. She made it wild and hyperdimensional. Suddenly, we could all see and hear more.”
From what I’ve seen in my own marketing career, I have noticed that making your efforts unique is the most effective way to get your audience to pay attention to what you have to say. The problem is that you probably don’t have a lot of money to put towards your marketing campaigns. But you can still be like Missy. You can think of unique ways to do the same old marketing things without having a massive budget. For example, you can use a video instead of an article to market your product. You can create interesting images that will get people’s attention and you can use social media to reach a lot of people with very little time or money. As long as you are creative, there are many ways to make your efforts stand out in a sea of competition.
Missy Elliot has been doing this for decades. And she continues to do it today. In the music video for her song, “Work It,” she created an elaborate dance routine that took place in many different locations and made full use of special effects and props. This video was a huge hit when it came out and it still has a tremendous amount of views on YouTube today.
You’ll be able to influence the masses in this way. After her performance during the Super Bowl, Elliott said, “When I produce something, it’s gotta be spectacular. “I have to believe that what I’m delivering the audience is genuine and revolutionary. I don’t just toss microwave records in the trash.”
