Tulsa doesn’t have the typical big city feel, but benefits from a thriving black community. There’s a hustle and bustle that only big cities can provide, but it doesn’t often feel like there isn’t enough room for everyone. I believe this is also in part to the number of creatives living in Tulsa, creating music, movies, storytelling, poetry and art. Creative types are drawn to Tulsa looking for inspiration and ways to create new areas of culture.
Several weeks ago, as part of the Forbes Journey to Wealth series, I traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I didn’t think about moving to Oklahoma before this trip, but after such an immersing experience, I am considering my next move to be in Tulsa. Being in an environment where black culture was ingrained and learning about the black prosperous business enterprise known as Greenwood was incredibly rejuvenating. Learning about J B Stratford, a real estate tycoon who might have become as well-known as Hilton & Marriot. To going to Fulton Street Coffee & Books, a black-owned coffee shop that served the greatest lavender honey tea I’ve ever had.
What’s left of what was once Black Wall Street is a community of people who are focused on rebuilding and building a community. Along with community, there are also relatively affordable living expenses, with downtown apartments starting at under $1,000. Even though there isn’t the same amount of activity as in a big metropolis, living in pricey neighborhoods where studio apartments start at $1,600 is not financially viable at the moment. The Greenwood area’s downtown is home to adorable coffee shops, black-owned restaurants, bars, and supermarkets. Even right beneath some units are restaurants. Coworking spaces are also available for remote workers.
Since I’ve been creating for quite some time, I’ve come to the conclusion that certain conditions must be met in order for me to truly be at the peak of my creative potential. I need to have my own space that is decorated just for me, money for play, and the company of like-minded individuals. Tulsa fulfills every requirement on my list, and I’m eager to see what I can produce there!
